As if the summer months weren’t harsh enough, the problem of an itchy scalp only makes you hate the season more. The summer season brings with it a host of problems, and itchiness of the scalp is one of the most common, more so, if you’re prone to dandruff.

A not-so-attractive hair issue, an itchy scalp can make you feel helpless and take a toll on your self-esteem. Unless it’s a one- or two-time thing, wherein, you may have sweat too much, leading to unusual itching, you might want to consider the primary causes of this condition for optimal summer skin care. So, if you want to know how to get rid of an itchy scalp, take note of the following causes behind your original concern:

#1: Sweat-
swaetDo you sweat often? Are you more susceptible to sweating during summer as opposed to other seasons? Do you work out heavily every day? Sweat has a tendency to react with the natural bacteria on your skin that leads to an itch. While you can’t reduce the general summer temperature, you can work towards sweating a little less.

Solution: Keep yourself hydrated all day long, drink loads of butter milk, and maintain proper hygiene to reduce sweating naturally, and keep your scalp itch-free.

#2: Dandruff

dandruffProne to dandruff? If you have excessively dry skin on the scalp, it can cause enough dandruff to last the entire summer. Due to the overgrowth of yeast (only aggravated by sweat), the dandruff can lead to itchiness and an overall discomfort.

Solution: Opt for anti-dandruff shampoos that contain selenium or zinc pyrithione to combat this issue.

#3: Sun exposure
sun-exposureBeen in the sun too long? As is scientifically proven, the sun isn’t exactly your skin’s best friend, and that includes your scalp too! It sensitizes your scalp, leading to inflammation and vulnerable to itchiness and irritation.

Solution: It’s advised that you cover your head with a scarf or a stole each time you step out in the day time, especially during peak hours.

#4: Head lice

head-liceContrary to popular belief, adult lice is a common occurrence that causes intense itching, and can also lead to dry skin behind your ears and back of the neck. If you’ve been experiencing the itch for a week or more, check immediately if you have lice.

Solution: Look for a shampoo that contains permethrin, or better yet, get a prescription shampoo from your dermatologist.

#5: Inadequate scalp exfoliation

scalp-careFocusing too much on the hair ends while shampooing? Your scalp needs cleaning too! During summer months, dirt and grime accumulate on your skin at a much faster rate, and inadequate shampooing can hamper your scalp hygiene.

Solution: Make sure that you massage your scalp properly each time you shampoo, and reduce the chances of any further itchiness.
