How to keep your skin healthy this winter

Winter is the season when you need to take extra care of your skin as ignorance can harm your skin. The frosty air outside, together with the heat indoors is bad for your skin. It strips your skin of moisture, producing dry, red and cracked skin, sometimes also leading to skin peeling.

Dry, inflamed, cracked or flaky skin can further lead to painful skin conditions. To avoid this, it is important that you have a skin care routine in winter. Here are a few winter skincare tips that can prove effective in helping you maintain your skin health:-

Moisturise, moisturise and moisturise!
Winter robs moisture from your skin. Skin cells that lack moisture are responsible for dryness, itching, wrinkling and scaling. Skin care in winters is important to enhance skin moisture. Keeping your skin moist shall prevent skin dryness and chapping. Creamy products are known to be effective in sealing your skin moisture.[1]

How to moisturise
A moisturizer should be applied 2-3 times a day or more depending on your needs. Moisturizers work best when applied on damp skin since they lock the moisture inside. Shortly after bathing or after a shower, pat the skin dry and apply a moisturizer. Moisturizers should not contain scents, alcohol, dyes or chemicals. Experts recommend using moisturizers containing ceramides.

Skin Hydration
To get glowing skin in winter and in just every other season, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water throughout the day! Hydrotherapy is of great use during winter as cold temperature tends to make your skin dry. Drinking enough water keeps the skin moist and smooth.

Use of a humidifier
One of the easiest winter beauty tips is to use a humidifier. Indoor heating leads to dry air in the surroundings. A humidifier helps enhance moisture levels in the air and also helps prevent the scaling and drying of skin.

Bathing Habits
Long durations in a hot shower can cause harm to your skin as the high temperature of water strips an already dry skin off its natural oils. You should limit your frequency of bathing, and your duration of showering and cleansing.[1] Pat your skin dry instead of scrubbing it as this helps restrict irritation to the dry skin. Rather than using regular soap, try using gentle soaps or skin cleansers with added moisturizers. Soaps free of harsh chemicals should be used.

Face Washing
To prevent drying of skin, you should restrict face washing. Wash your face once in the morning and once in the night or after sweating. As the weather changes, adapt to the above mentioned winter skin care regime. It will help you keep your skin soft and supple.
