Get rid of hair thinning and hair fall from these 6 helpful tips

Losing up to 100 hair strands a day is considered as normal, as lost hair re-grows by itself. It is a matter of concern if hair loss is more [1].

Having less than average hair on your scalp is hair thinning. Stress, illness, poor diet, genetics and medications are to be blamed for thinning hair. Hair thinning is a normal hair condition, and does not have health implications, but a receding hairline can be a source of embarrassment and destroy your self-esteem.

Here are 6 tips for women with thinning hair:

  1. Avoid rubbing hair with a towel after washing. When wet, hair is weak and brittle, and comes out quickly when pulled off. Wrap a towel around your wet hair, and let the hair air dry. Also, avoid using a hair dryer [2].

  2. Avoid excessive use of heat and hair stylers on your tresses, as they will only weaken your hair roots, and cause more damage. Avoid alcohol based products [2].

  3. Try to protect your hair from prolonged exposure to sun. Wear scarves, caps or wigs when you go out [3].

  4. Hair massage stimulates your hair follicles and induces hair growth. Be sure to massage with soft hands, preferably only your fingertips as scratching or pulling the hair can actually lead to hair loss [4].

  5. Anaemia or low haemoglobin in your blood is one of the common reasons behind hair thinning. Don’t overlook any blood related disorder. If you have one, seek medical advice and take iron-rich diet, including dark green leafy vegetables, tofu, sunflower seeds, beans, whole grains etc [5].

  6. Psychological state or emotional stress plays a significant role in contributing towards your hair loss. Calm your mind for good of your hair [6].

If your scalp is scaly or red, if you feel pain with hair loss, or if you have suddenly started developing facial hair or acne, then it is recommended for you to contact a healthcare professional and seek advice.
